Virtual Newsletter about Software Freedom December 13, 2025 No, NT/Win32 DOES suck! ----------------------- When Windows users say that """Linux""" users are """blaming Windows""" and that NT/Win32 is not that bad.[1] I'm always annoyed by this claim. 1. I'm not a "Linux" user, I'm a GNU/Linux user 2. NT/Win32 really is not a good system. I've covered a lot of these arguments in a video I've made.[2] Here are some arguments by a NT/Win32 lover. 1. No C:\ drive: Well, DOS has a C:\ drive! 2. No registry (this is part of NT): /etc works much better, files are much more organized, and much more! UNIX style ftw. 3. No Resource Hacker: This is because Windows Portable Executables act like game cartridges. They have the assets stored directly in the assets area. This isn't common in any place other than Windows apps, but it could be useful if you are TOO LAZY TO RECOMPILE. Just use the source code!!! 4. Hard to install apps: `sudo apt install package_name` 5. No Visual Basic/.NET/C# support: Mono exists. Also don't use Visual Basic/.NET/C# 6. No backwards compatibility: This is actually why older NT systems are faster. They have less backwards compatibility to implement so it's faster. Modern NT is slower because they have more backwards compatibility to implement so it's slower. 7. No NTFS support: Linux kernel supports it natively. You can boot into a GNU/Linux system from NTFS. Also NTFS has a lot of issues. 8. No NT design: Are you a manager of an NT workgroup? If so then you're not "maximizing" your NT potential. Also, NT has a bunch of features that suck in NTOSKernel and the Win32 user space. I might add more reasons. I'd really like to know exactly what NT has that GNU/Linux has no good alternative to.
