There's no reason not to use Matrix.
Telegram and Whatsapp are both proprietary and aren't private.
Matrix is private and free.
The encryption is extremely strong.
It's decentralized, meaning there is no single server unlike Signal.
You can use it for both direct messages, group chats, and large communities!

I'm active on the unmojang, SonicDE, and XLibre rooms.

There are tons of clients as well, if you don't like Element, you can use Nheko.
If you don't like Nheko, use FluffyChat.
If you don't like FluffyChat, use gomuks.
There's even a Matrix client for Emacs!
By the way, yes, you *can* use Matrix on Hurd.
