Virtual Newsletter about Software Freedom October 12, 2025 GNU/Hurd in 2025? ----------------- GNU Hurd is a great kernel, really. Linux is obsolete, and Hurd is the future. I was able to install Hurd recently. Debian GNU/Hurd 64-bit runs on my ThinkPad T420. I am able to do everything that I need to do on GNU/Linux with GNU(/Hurd). Except for one thing. Networking doesn't work. This is due to the underlying network stack. The network stack uses NetBSD's rump kernel. While rump kernel and rumpnet do work properly, there's an issue with the Hurd implementation. In DHCP, the packets get fragmented. [1] This only happens on 64-bit Hurd, not 32-bit Hurd. Should I wait for a fix for 64-bit Hurd? Or should I use 32-bit Hurd? Send me an email at "nexussfan (AT) duck (DOT) com". Or, if you use ActivityPub, reply to my post.
